Synology NAS data recovery
First of all, before you start your data recovery, most of Synology NAS devices use their own RAID technology — Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR). SHR allows you to use disks of different sizes in one storage device. So, if you combined different disks into single storage, SHR technology complicates the data recovery process. More than that, if RAID metadata is severely damaged, the DIY recovery will be impossible. If you use the same capacity disks in your Synology NAS the data recovering process will not differ from the typical NAS recovery.
One more important thing. Some Synology NAS models like DS916 +, DS716 + II, DS716 +, DS416play work under BTRFS filesystem, not EXT. There are very few data recovery tools that are capable to recover data from BTRFS filesystem. ReclaiMe File Recovery is one of them.
If everything is fine with your Synology NAS device itself, and the disks you want to recover data from are not mechanically broken but you can’t get access to the files stored on the NAS you can try to use ReclaiMe File Recovery to get your data back.
So, to recover Synology NAS data, you’ll need to:
1. Prepare free SATA cables on the PC motherboard or USB-to-SATA adapters and an additional storage device to copy saved data.
2. Unplug your Synology NAS device, pull the disks out of it.
3. Connect the disks to a Windows PC.
4. Download and run ReclaiMe data recovery software.
5. Select the Synology volume under the Linux LVM or BTRFS sections.
6. Check the recovered files by looking at the preview window. It’s easier to choose jpeg, mp3 or mp4 files for this. If any of these file types look good usually the other files are recovered fine as well. Usually, it takes about 3–5 % of the scan to see all the files.
7. Purchase ReclaiMe data recovery Ultimate license key and save the recovered files.
